HOW AND WHY IT WORKS : THE SCIENCE
The Sig Sauer P320 Series of pistols employs a tilting barrel breech lock concept created by John Moses Browning known as the: Browning Breech Lock.
Whenever the trigger is pressed during the firing sequence, the barrel and slide move backward a short distance and stop momentarily to allow a majority of the gasses to escape the barrel thus allowing safe cartridge extraction. During this process, the barrel stops on a crossbar due to angular lugs under the breech body causing the breech to drop and duck under the slide and continue rearward for case extraction. This is the exact moment that rearward and angular momentum start a dreaded process known as recoil and pushes rearward into your hand.
Further continuance of the slide rearward at a high rate of speed causes the front of the barrel to make contact with the slide, due to the angled lug under the breech the barrel tilts upward and the slide is continues to its furthest rearward point, this causes upward angular momentum at the the breech lock/crossbar area (this location is where the fulcrum is). The front of the firearm tilts upward while the rear tilts downward. The muscles and tendons in the wrists cannot control all of this negative and unwanted angular momentum causing the wrists and hands to move upward (aka "Breaking the wrist").
Typical shooters experience somewhere between 14 to 22 degrees of angular rotation every shot fired due to body size, grip technique, hand and wrist strength, body mechanics, stance, breathing, etc. The shooter has to employ many crucial mechanics and technique principles at the same time to shoot successive rounds to be moderately to extremely accurate. Typical shooters must wait for the firearm to return to the plane it was fired from and acquire the target again and readjust the sights to target. As anyone shoots faster, inaccuracy usually is a proportionally inverse result. Those who shoot really fast must must wait to shoot in the "dwell cycle" of the firearm and employ a course targeting tactic. Some shooters are able to use alternative hand placement/grip techniques on the firearm to further improve some additional recoil management with side effects to those choices. Keeping both palms firmly on the grips and wrists closest together ultimately yields the best results with the least negative consequences for most shooters.
The Odin Armory Thumb Rest is a 55 degree forward angled thumb rest that replaces the factory takedown lever in just seconds and is located near the breech lock area ultimately mitigating an overwhelming majority of the negative recoil effects. If you hold your left hand up vertically (like you are reaching for a cup), your thumb to forefinger angle measurement is at or near 55 degrees. As you clasp the Sig P320 firearm with the Odin Armory Thumb Rest installed, your offhand thumb will comfortably and naturally land on the thumb rest. As you drive the firearm outward, your off hand thumb will naturally start to apply more and more pressure to the thumb rest the further the firearm is driven out from the chest. We call this "Loading up the thumb". Because of the 55 degree forward angle of the thumb rest, you are now using this tremendous pressure (approx. 100 Newtons)from the loaded thumb and pressing forward on the takedown lever area inside of the firearm just forward of the fulcrum point.
With the Odin Armory Thumb Rest installed, as soon as the cartridge is fired and the firearm starts the recoil process, your thumb with all of its power pressing forward on the thumb rest immediately interrupts an overwhelming majority of the angular rotation at the fulcrum ultimately resulting is less recoil experienced by the shooter. With the recoil resistance of the thumb rest, most of the recoil never reaches to the wrist to start the "breaking" process.
Our customers typically experience 4-6 degrees of recoil with the part versus 14-22 degrees without the part. You do the math and you can see that our product mitigates the most recoil of any thumb rest on the market for Sig P320s. Less recoil results in:
